I agree this is an area where the Akka gRPC client can be improved! We should definitely look at the linked proposal, but also remember to look for the best...
As a short-term solution you could try setting `akka.grpc.client."*".backend = "akka-http"`. Do you have a reference to that netty bug?

Sounds like this could also be on top of something like #1433 - unfortunately I've been focusing on other work and haven't found time to seriously look into that one...
