'status' and 'image' post formats don't support featured images

If I create a post and set a featured image then that image doesn’t show up if I’m using photo (!) or status post types but if I switch to the standard post type then the image is displayed.

What I had expected was something like this

standard: title + text + featured image photo: text + featured image status: text + featured image

What happens is

standard: title + text + featured image photo: text status: text
