future of the raster package(?)

Hi all

This may not be the correct place, but I haven't found a better one yet... I'm currently trying to figure out what the future for the raster package itself is? Is it going to be retired like rgeos and friends and removed from cran "soon-ish", will it just languish on cran until it breaks, or something else?

The background for this: I help maintain a package depending on gdistance, and they contemplate just not transitioning to terra ( https://github.com/AgrDataSci/gdistance/issues/3 ).

@edzer Thank you for that hint. Somehow it completely escaped my notice that raster moved to github as well in "recent" years...
