:hi VimrDefaultCursor not themable

Apparently the highlight group Cursor is not used in vimr. I stumbled upon this issue https://github.com/qvacua/vimr/issues/590 and this pr https://github.com/qvacua/vimr/pull/790, and tried to theme the VimrDefaultCursor and VimrInsertCursor but without success. Is this working and am I doing something wrong or are these colors not meant to be themed?
