How are you supposed to install this?

The folder structure is not suitable for what the Arduino IDE expects, so it can't be installed as Library. Are you supposed to somehow add the .h file into the project folder and then include it or how?

This example is not meant to be a library. So put all three files in a directory with the same name as the .ino file and start it.
