HTTP/HTTPS/FTP protocol no longer works for zip URIs
What is the bug or the crash?
Up to QGIS version 3.38 it worked, from version 3.40 and 3.42 it no longer works, below error message
Steps to reproduce the issue
- start QGIS
- ON Data Source Manager | Vector
- Select Source Type: Protocol_HTTP(S);
- On Protocol select HTTP/HTTPS/FTP
- on URI paste: 'https://confini-amministrativi.it/api/v2/it/20240101/regioni.zip'
- Click on Add
- message appears!!!

Hi @nyalldawson, could this issue be related to PRs https://github.com/qgis/QGIS/pull/57826 / https://github.com/qgis/QGIS/pull/57868?
I would like to know if there are plans to restore the old behavior or abandon the idea of using zipped files. I am available for a fundraiser if you tell me the amount to collect
