Stalled or Downloading Metadata stuck

Open gmeroni opened this issue 1 year ago • 13 comments

qBittorrent & operating system versions

qBittorrent: 4.6.5 Operating system: Linux 4.4.302+ x86_64 Qt: 6.7.1 libtorrent-rasterbar: 1.2.19.0

What is the problem?

I've recently upgraded from a very old version of qBit to the latest version. Since the upgrade, everything is either stalled or stuck on downloading metadata with no seeders. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. I'm running everything on Portainer on my Synology.

Steps to reproduce

Just download and add a torrent from Sonarr or Radarr.

Additional context

No network change at all Tried with tons of different images with hundreds of peers I just re-deployed the container with new image Tried all possible solution found on the internet - no luck I tried even a clean start on a different path, no luck even on this case...

Log(s) & preferences file(s)

qbittorrent.log qBittorrent.csv

Changed extension from .conf to .csv

This is not a qBittorrent issue, there are several reasons for this: no peers, DHT not working, wrong network interface. Maybe I forgot something else.

The fact that other factors might contribute is not a reason for discarding qBit issue. Let me put more perspective then:

  1. No network change at all
  2. Tried with tons of different images with hundreds of peers
  3. I just re-deployed the container with new image
  4. Tried all possible solution found on the internet - no luck

Do you have the config file migrated from the old version? Try to wipe the client configuration (~/.config/qBittorrent and ~/.local/share/qBittorrent) and make a clean start.

Yes but then as you correctly suggest I tried even a clean start on a different path, no luck even on this case...

You are not alone, it is the same for me starting today on Windows 10. I've tried almost everything...

  1. I've reset my router
  2. I've reset the Windows Firewall
  3. I've removed third-party firewall (TinyWall)
  4. Downgraded to the previous version of qBittorrent

Nothing works...

Update

I notice this just now in the Execution Log. Gonna look into it I'll let you know. 2024-05-29 20:45 - The configured network interface is invalid. Interface: "ethernet_32773"

Heck, how many times do have to say "don't change the default settings if you don't know what you're doing" for users to remember that? (thinking out loud)

I have the same issue; upgraded from 4.6.2 to 4.6.5 - not other changes to the system, and all downloads are stuck in "downloading metadata"

Kybeer avatar Jul 11 '24 09:07 Kybeer

Same issue :(

chris-morris-528 avatar Jul 16 '24 03:07 chris-morris-528

I also have the same issue! Since this week, no download starts anymore.

Checked the interfaces, it is on any interface. I have 130 DH Nodes. Multiple peers and seeds, but I doesn't do anything..

Still an issue Screenshot 2024-10-17 035440

I changed to "any interface" and upgraded to 4.6.7 - it works well so far.

I have a similar issue on Windows 11 which mainly happens at Windows startup when qBittorrent remains stuck at "Stalled" instead of starting to download the unfinished torrent. Notable settings that are changed from default are, Peer connection protocol is set to, "uTP", Port used for incoming connection is set to "Any" and check "Enable anonymous mode".

It's a BUG or what ??!?!!? Try to download a torrent after using search engine.... i'm on Ubuntu with Qbittorrent 5.0.5 Flatpak edition. All it's setted.... Port it's corrected forwarded on my router and i have a FTTH with 1GBps download/upload. So every file i add use on search result and remain stalled on Download Metadata for ever! look here:

What's i need to do ? It exist a valid solution ???

My goodness, how many thumbs down on my comments. And people still think it's a qBittorrent BUG, but the issue is definitely not on their side (right down to limited torrent traffic from their ISP).

As I said before, all these “Downloading Metadata stuck” issues should be closed.

What about my issue two comments above that qBittorrent often get stalled instead of resuming torrents at system startup. Hibernation is off on my system so every startup is a proper start-up. qBittorrent setting changes that I mentioned above has been restored to default values. This issue must be qBittorrent related right? I don't have this on Deluge for example.

SeriousHoax avatar Apr 20 '25 07:04 SeriousHoax

@SeriousHoax If you have qBittorrent running with system startup, try using delayed startup, say 20-30 seconds.

Hmm that's a good idea. But actually I'm having a different issue at the moment which is not related to this opened issue. My main issue at the moment is, qBittorrent eats up all the bandwidth while downloading which makes my browsing speed slow. Once again this is something I don't have in Deluge. So even though I very much prefer qBittorrent for everything, I'm having to use Deluge. But anyway, that's a different issue. I'll keep that delayed startup on mind. Thanks.

Use connection limits.

ah... the demonstration of the uselessness of comments and the non-resolution of the problem that has persisted practically forever.

the good thing is that the problem of the "stuck at download metadata" disappears immediatelly if you "force" the download start or simply use a different torrent. So in some cases what it's this if not a bug ?

DjDiabolik avatar Apr 20 '25 15:04 DjDiabolik

This topic has become a trash of various problems. Why different ones? Because "stuck at download metadata" is not a problem in itself, but a consequence of some kind of problem that can be both in qBittorrent itself and (as is often the case) beyond it. If you want to have a chance to understand your specific case, then open a separate Issue and provide as many details about it as possible.

Yeah... you are absolutely right. I have simply search by google to reach this issue (and it's most recent in among many others) and apparently source of different problems.

Speakly specific my issue i have tryed to understand what these metadata were: apparently this metadata cointain information about entire torrent.... such as the name of the files to download and their size. in this specific case I just had to change the source tracker with a different one. Metadata get immediatelly and download started immediatelly after that.

the problem, if I may say so, is in the case of rare torrents.... but in this case i have also read this issue can be caused from wrong information like wrong number of seed or peers indicated in the tracker itself.

In some cases, perhaps the client itself is unable to download this information from the tracker....in that case it could also be a tracker blocked by your ISP but can be reached by internal search engine or Qbittorrent.

in this specific issue instead... 100% i'm totally sure that situation "Stalled" and "Download Metadata" it's totally two different situation.

Were these torrents files or added with magnet links?

I've noticed that magnet links with zero seeders will not be able to download the meta data that is found in a torrent file. QB doesn't create any kind of torrent file equivalent from maglinks either. So upgrading might have wiped the meta data that once existed, but now that there are no seeders it's unable to download the metadata which is why its stuck in that state.

@seanvandermolen in my case sometime from .torrent downloaded and sometime from magnet link. it's not same things the two different method to add a torrent ?

@DjDiabolik

I'm not confidently sure. From my experience using them with QB torrent web interface from my seedbox they often will exhibit this same issue if there are no seeders, leechers.

Some googling suggests they are the same, even this AI overview says they're the same. But then, highlighted in yellow, maglinks derive a info hash based off the file which helps the client find the torrent file... which makes me assume there is still a difference and the full file metadata and file hash needs to come from other seeders/ leechers.

I could be entirely wrong and perceiving a difference that doesn't exist. Then again, I might be seeing this same issue randomly occurring, without an upgrade from a previous version.

I did a bit more searching and figured out what's happening during the downloading metadata status.

When a torrent client says "downloading metadata," it means the client is trying to retrieve information about the files within the torrent, such as their names, sizes, and the structure of the files, before the actual file download can begin. This process is essential for the client to know what files to download and how to assemble them correctly. If this process is stuck, it can prevent the torrent from downloading.

@DjDiabolik So, any kind of connection issue will cause this. However, I found this reddit post that might give you a clue. It's for windows, but if you figure out the right directories for your NAS this might solve your problem.
