"Error opening file for writing: C:\Program Files\qBittorrent\qbittorrent.exe" when attempting update, then fresh download
qBittorrent & operating system versions
Download / install issue. I am attempting to download various 64-bit versions 64-bit operating system, x64-based processor. Window 11 Pro v.21H2 / Windows Feature Experience Pack 1000.22000.856.0
What is the problem?
"Error opening file for writing: C:\Program Files\qBittorrent\qbittorrent.exe" when attempting update, then fresh download. My version of qBittorrent was corrupted (I am presuming by this partial install). I have deleted my current qBittorrent installation and tried a fresh download, but with the same result. Used both Firefox (including once in privacy mode) and Chrome. I tried the different 64 bit downloads. I am running Windows 11 Pro. 16 GB RAM, Intest Core i7 @ 2.60Hz, 64-bit operating system, x64-based processor
Steps to reproduce
- go through download process - accepting all options as defaults.
- Download and install starts, but almost immediately stops and the above error message appears. Retrying immediately generates the same error message.

Make sure that qBt installer gets adequate permissions to install inside C:\Program Files\ directory. Also make sure that some antivirus is not blocking the write request.
Close your qBittorrent from taskbar if you haven't and try again.
thanks.

It seems to me the installer should close any running instances as many other installers do.

Clearly not always, as one of the solutions to this issue is to close qBt from the taskbar, which is why I left my comment. I was getting this same error, no corrupted install or anything, and that solution is what fixed it for me.
What creates this edgecase then ?
No idea. I just know that qBt was working great, I went to update it but forgot to close it all the way out first, and got that error.
I came here looking for a fix, and closing it from the task tray was the solution that worked.
@CamdenQ Did you download installer from official link or use anything like winget/winget-cli?
I followed the prompt within the application itself and downloaded the latest stable version from that link.
same problem here, cannot update to 4.6.5. killed qbitorrent with taskmgr, still wouldn't work. then downloaded the installer directly and tried again, same error
Mine has started working so long as I close it out entirely before trying to run the update. Not sure what changed, because that wasn’t working when I commented before.
