Read/Process MVIRI (MFG) native files

Open haiderabbas1989 opened this issue 2 years ago • 10 comments

Hi,

I have a large number of Meteosat First Generation data in native format, e.g., METEOSAT7-MVIRI-MTPCLDS-NA-1-20160131010110.000000000Z-20160131010110-4779480.nat

I have been struggling in reading and processing the files as the satpy does not support a reader, nor does the EUMETSAT Data Tailor. Any suggestion/help is appreciated

Regards,

Haider

Hi Haider, I have worked with this data but not recently. I will take a look and see if I have any suitable python code and get back to you in a few days (not at the office just now, so can't access my code).

Not Satpy, but there may be some useful pointers at https://github.com/FIDUCEO/FCDR_MVIRI which in turn refers to a library at the EUMETSAT GitLab.

I suspect the format should be similar to the seviri native reader. @ameraner do you know?

I suppose this too, but one would probably need the exact definition of the header and data contents (sizes, types, etc.) to be able to set up the reader... Unfortunately in our group we don't have any experience with this. I tried to look around, but the only proper documents I could find are on the reprocessed Fiduceo FCDR dataset (for which we have already a reader, mviri_l1b_fiduceo_nc), but which are probably not useful for this cause.

I think the best bet is to try to send a request to [email protected], they should be able to route the request to the best contact person.

@ameraner I have already sent an email to [email protected], before posting this issue here. The replied posting that no information is available on this query and will get back soon. I'm not sure if they can also help me with this. @gerritholl the EUMETSAT Gitlab clearly states that MVIRI Native file processing is not supported by any code provided there. @simonrp84 Simon, it would be wonderful whenever you are available and check if you have the desired code available with you.

I appreciate all of you for the prompt responses here. I am still trying to figure out a way to solve this.

Hi Simon, have you been able to look for the code for these data files yet?

Sorry, was away. Unfortunately we do not have any suitable code for this - our MFG reader is in fortran. I may try to convert it to python when I have time, but that will not be for many months.

If it's okay, then you can share the Fortran code. I've a team member who knows to work with Fortran.

HI Haider, we have code to read data but I wonder whether you may want to use the improved dataset from MVIRI? The details are available here: https://navigator.eumetsat.int/product/EO:EUM:DAT:0080

Feel free to contact me if you need more information.

Best regards, Viju
