I think we should take this as an opportunity to start on https://github.com/pypi/warehouse/issues/16541 and document the API here in more detail.

Makes sense! I can start an adjacent hierarchy for API docs and begin to fill it in with these bits first.

Okay, this should be good to go: I've updated both the dev and user docs to use examples from the real sampleproject==4.0.0.
