Running pip show after hatch shell fails to show summary information from pyproject.toml

I ran

hatch shell and then ran pip show mypackage

It is missing metadata specified in the pyproject.toml:

summary is blank, but description in pyproject.toml is not blank license is blank, but license in the pyproject.toml is not blank

author name is bank, but author name is not blank in pyproject.toml author email includes my author name and email address from pyproject.toml

Not sure why. When I leave the shell, and then change my description or email address in pyproject.toml and try to shell in again, it does not update with my changes.
