Neither the description nor the documentation really make it clear from the start if this can be used purely locally but then authentication is required with logfire.pydantic.dev

So, if this cannot be used completely stand-alone please point this out to save people who do not want to register with some company to use a so-called open-source package some time.

We will make the wording clearer. Obviously you can use it for local dev with the free tier and/or configure a different backend, but I get that is not what you are looking for.

It's not 'so-called' because connecting to a different OpenTelemetry backend is a real thing that users do.
