pyopenssl should document explicit permission for name from the OpenSSL project

Open sandrotosi opened this issue 9 years ago • 5 comments

forwarding https://bugs.launchpad.net/pyopenssl/+bug/457795 as it seems to be missing:

The OpenSSL license states:

 * 5. Products derived from this software may not be called "OpenSSL"
 * nor may "OpenSSL" appear in their names without prior written
 * permission of the OpenSSL Project.

Since pyopenssl contains "OpenSSL" in its name, i'm assuming that such permission has been explicitly granted at some point in the past. If this is the case, it would be good to document this explicitly. If such permission hasn't been explicitly granted, it would be good to respect the license and ask for it, and then document it (assuming that it's granted, of course).

After I got handed the keys to pyOpenSSL I was informed about this fact. I guess I should reach out to OpenSSL.

yup, I guess that's the right plan :)

I’ve sent an e-mail to openssl-core.

FYI: https://www.openssl.org/blog/blog/2015/08/01/cla/

Seems like this issue might resolve itself as OpenSSL intends to move to Apache 2. Which also explains why nobody got back to me yet.

The updated license still contains the following clause:

5. Products derived from this software may not be called "OpenSSL"
nor may "OpenSSL" appear in their names without prior written
permission of the OpenSSL Project.

.. so it looks like a written permission is still required.
