ERA5 single-point time series database
ERA5 has recently launched a time series-specific database for ERA5 which brings down request times from +10 minutes to a few seconds. More detailed info on the API can be found here. An announcement on the feature can be found here.
Note, that the service is currently listed as experimental. Here's a description of the service:
The dataset presented here is a regridded subset of the full ERA5 data set on native resolution that is stored in a format designed for retrieving long time-series for a single point. When the requested location does not match the exact location of a grid point then the nearest grid point is used instead. It is this source of ERA5 data that is used by the ERA-Explorer to ensure response times required for the interactive web-application.

The service requires using CDSAPI which we have been hesitant to add as an optional requirement before due to lack of maintenance. However, the package has seen very frequent releases in the past year or two, so I think our view on this could change.
I plan on making a PR in the following week, but we may delay merging until the service becomes permanent.
Implementing a wrapper around this API addresses #1264 and in part #1484.
