Custom configuration according to directory?

Can I have per directory configurations? For example, always show hidden files in a particular directory?

Would you like to place the settings in a file in the root directory, or have an alist where you can set the options?

Both options will be good for me. But I think a central configuration is easier to maintain. Thanks!
