Custom previews

It would be great if it were possible to create custom functions for previews depending on filetype. For example, I am working a lot with netCDF files (a binary data format used in Earth sciences), and there's a command line utility ncdump which shows the file's metadata. It would be great if I could make ranger use the command ncdump -h FILENAME as preview command for all *.nc files.

Is this somehow possible? Or maybe there's a more general Emacs preview feature that one could use, that I don't know about?
