Google TV Support

Is your feature request related to a problem? Please describe. There doesn't seem to be a good way to run Memories on Google TV currently.

Describe the solution you'd like A dedicated Google TV app.

Describe alternatives you've considered I've tried side-loading the apk on my Chromecast 4K with Google TV, however this does not work as the authentication involves opening a web browser on the device, which is not possible for most, if not all, Google TV devices.

Additional context I absolutely love this app (thanks!) but struggle currently with throwing up photos and videos on the big screen for the family to enjoy. I can see that here is an open request for casting support, however, I feel a dedicated app would make much more sense. The way I'm achieving this currently is by casting my entire screen to Google TV, however things are blurry and not full resolution most of the time.

Btw, I should mention that I did sideload a browser app and was able to get the authentication to work, however a few things I noticed: 1. Navigation is a bit of a pita. 2. Photos/Videos don't go fullscreen.

I think this is probably a duplicate of my "feature" request from a while ago: https://github.com/pulsejet/memories/issues/1062

I don’t see the point of having a dedicated Android TV app for this. It essentially exposes the entire library to guests, which, in my case, is not suitable.

A better and more discreet solution would be the ability to cast from a phone to any cast-supported device. This feature would make it easy and straightforward to share memories with friends and family, while keeping full control on the phone you’re casting from.

There’s already an older feature request https://github.com/pulsejet/memories/issues/555 for this, which was moved to the backlog. In my opinion, it should be reconsidered again.

I don’t see the point of having a dedicated Android TV app for this.

There are plenty of reasons to do this but for me the biggest is that there's always a quality issue with casting from the phone depending on your WiFi quality, local traffic etc. All the nice HDR photos and videos from modern phones sometimes end up being a blurry mess when casting and defeats the whole purpose of using the biggest screen in the house.

It essentially exposes the entire library to guests, which, in my case, is not suitable.

Not sure what you mean by this. If you're saying having the app means guests can browse your photo library, then it's no different than any of the other apps on your TV. You can also create guest profiles on your Android TV.

My point is that if guests gather around the TV I would have to open Memories on my Android TV device and all albums would be exposed to them. I'd rather just want to share directly to the TV. Regarding the quality I never had any problems or quality loses streaming high resolution pictures and videos.

In your case, I would also just create a guest profile of your memories account or maybe even the app itself. Or simply log out of the app, before the guest arrive. As @littlegraycells said, it's no different than any other app.

And IMO screen casting is not an alternative, not only because of the quality of the stream but also because the aspect ratio of most phones and the TV mismatch.

That eliminates the convenience to spontaneously cast media to guests. Sure, I can create a guest profile in memories and only show media from that profile. This would mean that I need to prepare this profile for each guest because not every guest should see the same. Therefore I don't see an advantage to use an app on Android TV...

Nobody here has anything against the possibility to cast media to a TV, it just a different feature request. Just because you don't see the need for a Android TV, it doesn't have to mean that nobody else does.

What (if anything) gets prioritized by @pulsejet is a different question.
