Does the same image show up in the Files app? It's possible there's something wrong with the JPEG.
That doesn't sound right ... on my iOS device (Safari) Nextcloud does stay logged in. So I guess this seems like a Nextcloud misconfiguration?
Neither. Even if I close the Safari tab, Nextcloud stays logged in.

That seems correct. The timeline needs to load lower-res thumbs to be performant. But the boundaries at which these exist aren't necessarily the same.
Yes. This is a workaround for some weirdness in Nextcloud behavior. The sizes of the returned images match the pre-generated ones.
