So you have a broken 1st controller port in your console... Did you try to change a ribbon cable for it?

I am asking because it is a hardware issue, not software... Of course I understand that most PS2 consoles are very old and it can be a problem to find spare parts for it... and this is a feature request...
Anyway as a workaround did you try to use a DS3\DS4 gamepad? You can assign 1st or 2nd gamepad port for it.
Actually it works, but I wanted to cut this part of the board for a project

I thought about using a ps3 controller on the usb port, but the problem would be if the cmos battery ran out, I would lose the auto boot on the memory card and would not be able to enter the in OPL
I am not sure what CMOS battery has to do with auto boot or with a memory card?
CMOS battery is only for a few settings like time\date.
Actually my project is a ps2 portable, if a use a ps3 gamepad and for some reason the console doesn't boot automatically on OPL, i wouldn't be able to connect a dualshock 2 in slot 2 to enter OPL by FMBC. Do you know if it would be hard to desenvolve a function for OPL that allows you to use controller 2 as controller 1 in games? I don't remember for shure, but i believe that controller 2 works in FMBC menu, am i right?
Nice idea, to make it portable!
You should be able to operate DS2 from its 2nd controller port in Browser, Memory card browser, OPL, FMCB Configurator. Even E? Launch keys should work. You can check it yourself.
That is why I suggested DS3\DS4 via Bluetooth or USB. So in an emergency you can use it to change anything.
As for a software swapping controller ports (change port 2 to 1)... to make it work with games... One of devs should be able to give you more detailed info.
Best regards.
