[FR] External DVD Drive Support

Hello, initially I apologize for any misunderstanding, as I am using the help of translators, if there is any doubt, just mention that I will look for a way to be more specific. Therefore, I will try to be brief in the suggestion so that the text is more concise.

That said, here's my idea for a possible OPL update...

An fact that makes many people resort to using OPL in their Playstation's is the gradual failure of your optical drives over time, it is common for the reading lens to wear out, limiting the use of the console to other sources such as USB, ETH, etc. It is true that with this in mind, many developers are continually looking for new ways to circumvent this limitation, and as a way to further expand this possibility, I believe it is fully possible to use external DVD drives trough usb.

See, it would probably be necessary to write a driver for this purpose as is the case on compatibility with other controls like the PS4's control. Even if there is no correlation, it is worth mentioning that some consoles accept this type of external add-on such as the nintendo wii u and the PS5, in which it is possible to use external drives, the usb only transmits the data from the disk to the console, roughly speaking, would be equivalent to using a flash drive, so such an implementation is not impossible and would be a nice extra option for using disks on the console.

A few downsides:

  • speed through a USB (1.1) port in PS2 is very limited
  • even a USB HDD will be faster transfer than a USB DVD drive because of e.g. seek time so many things may load slower
  • additional drivers are needed
  • probably not every DVD drive will be compatible
  • prices for a flash-drive are quite cheap in these days

A few upsides:

  • you can use your original or backup discs for this
  • you will not need a PC\laptop to rip your PS2 games to ISO
