Mk3 new 45 degrees part fan noise
Just printed and installed the new 45 degrees part fan assembly, and I think the part fan doesn't like that very much, it will makes a none periodically noise, it sounds like the fan bearing dosen’t seat right, I’m sure this noise is not the noise cost by the PWM speed control that everyone is talking about, and yes, I got that PWM noise too, it will happen when I use the PET setting to print PETG, so does anybody experience this 45 degrees part fan noise?
Hello,
could you please confirm if this still occurs with the fan check off as the upgrade should not cause any noise in the fan.

Ok, I had checked that, and yes, the noise is coming from the fan, and I had a 26 Hr print the other day, 25 Hr in, the fan noise is so big that I can't hear the stepper motor, the printer stops, and show me part fan error, I exam the fan, it still turns freely and no debris in it, resume the print, nothing wrong this time, but I switched back to the 90 degrees fan setup for now.
There's a recommendation I'd like to make, maybe let the part fan facing up instead facing down will help?
Hi there,
you might want to check the zipties are not pinching the wire causing this as this is possible as i assure you we have done this update on our printers here in the office and we dont get this issue, please let me know if any different after loosening the zipties.

Good pointer with the zipties. This should be in the manual i think :-)
There's a recommendation I'd like to make, maybe let the part fan facing up instead facing down will help?
Absolutely. It is awkward to let the fan blades hang this way. I've seen many fan bearings wear down really fast this way.
Hello,
so are you still getting the noise on the fan then ?

Hi Douglas,
After that little accident, I printed several prints without any issues, maybe the fan had some bad mood and decided to give me a hard time that day, LOL.
Anyhow, I’m really not feeling comfortable with the fan hanging that way, so I changed back to the 90 degree setting with a quite cleverly designed fan duct, see link below
https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:3063554
Used this setting more then 100 Hours of print time with no issues
HI there,
ok i see if its better for you this way no problem but does seem a bit weird though.

Prusa i3 MK3 I'm also having the issue with PET filament printing and fan noise. The tone begins immediately upon printing and occurred from my very first PET print today. My printer is 10 days old and zipties were all installed loosely. Also, the fan made no noise during PLA printing.
I used the tune option during to troubleshoot and tried a range of fan speeds and the only effect was to change the pitch and volume of the tone. Then only time the tone went away was when I set the tune amount very low, around 25 and below. Turning the fan off stops the noise of course.
I'm running the 3.4.0 version of the MK3 firmware. Since today is my first time with PET on this printer, I don't know if the issue occurs with earlier firmware.
Hello,
if the fan is indeed a bit noisy could you please provide a video to see as i am not sure why it would do this only with PETG even though yes for this filament it would be a bit needed as opposed to PLA but still should not be loud.

Hi, I am having the same problem with the fan. I will send you a video in the evening. BTW, I wanted to share something that looks interesting. I removed the fun and I noticed that keeping the fan horizontal with the blades "facing the sky" the noise goes away. Moreover, it really looks a problem with the bearings since it looks like the rotor is out of the center and get back his position when the fan is rotated as described before. The noise started suddenly while printing with PETG but, despite softer, is there even with PLA and clearly reduces, but never disappear, with the speed of the fan. Both this facts look compatible with a mechanical issue at the bearing.
Yes, I have the same issue as grhawk, and now even I have the set up for 90 degrees, my part cooling fan still making noise sometimes, sounds like a dry bearing grinding, but it will soon go away, and the printer gives me part fan error continuously, I need to turn off fan detection so I can print, I think my fan is shocked or it's defective from the get-go, need a new one for sure, and I already contact prusa customer service.
same as? https://github.com/prusa3d/Prusa-Firmware/issues/460
@trevjonez Yes and no, I have that PWM noise while printing PETG, because the fan speed is low, but I now have a noise sounds like a real broked fan, don't know it that caused by the 45 degrees position? it sounds like a dry grinding noise, I think my fan bushing wears out already.
Hi, Link to the video with the fan noise. I was making the fan moving just using the reset button. Other than the noise a clear sign that the issue is because of something with the bearing is the increse in vibrations when the fan is turned with the hole toward the bottom. Hope can be helpful.

I'm also getting considerable fan noise ever since the fan was set to 45 degrees. Its worst at the start of a print and quiets down a bit after running but still very noticeable. I think the fan is also making more noticeable noise when it does long fast moves across the X and/or Y axis.
I think the problem is this particular fan does not like the fan blade pulling away from the bearing/bushing when at the 45 degrees causing the noise. I would bet if the entire fan assembly was flipped 180 degrees so the fan blade had some down pressure on the bearing/bushing it would not make the noise.
HI there,
could you please provide a video of these issues for me to see or hear the fan.

The noise starts around 6 seconds, I caught it at the end of the first layer. First layer it is quiet as the fan is not running during that time. I tried to tap the fan while it was running so you could hear the noise stop but it did't work as well as I was hoping. You can also notice the X/Y movements that it really makes noise. Let me know if you need anything else.

Thanks
After I watched the attached video I can say that this is the exact behavior my printer has. No noise att all with the fan mounted vertical, but at 45 degrees it's horrible. I guess that the fan have a sleeve bearing and not a proper ball bearing.
Hi RiDDLeRn and xyipher,
Yes, I had the same issue around 6 months ago, sounds horrible at 45 degrees, even stop turning at low speed, I contact customer support, they shipped me a new fan, after this experience, I only mount my fan at 90 degrees, but after 6 months and 7 KG of filaments, it started acting up again, I think the fan is just not high quality, I took the new one apart, it's using brass bushing, no ball bearing, the grease dried up, so I put some "Super Lube 51010" in the brass bushing and assemble the fan back, works fine now, but don't know when the grease will dry up again.
I think the way to go is to buy a PWM controlled ball bearing fan, but I can't find one on Amazon, hope Prusa will do a recall, horrible fan.
I also experienced fan noise while printing PETG. When printing PLA no noise occured. This is because at 100% speed (for PLA) the noise is not present but as soon as the fan speed is below ~95%, the noise kicks in. (fan speed for PETG printing is set to around 50%).
The newest firmware definitely helped because i didn't hear much noise when printing PETG today but still I also believe that the fan should be upgraded, It's way too noisy even when operating without issues.
Hi there,
i can send you a replacement fan for this but would need the order number as i cant seem to find the account details.

Hi prusa3d-bb,
Do you improve the fan? or I don't see any reason to get the same one, it will break again in 6 months for my kind of use....
Hello,
Sorry for the delay in getting back to you, we have been quite overwhelmed, following the release of our newsletter to over 100,000 people last week.
The newest version of firmware has a fix applied which adjusts the frequency of the print fan when at a lower speed setting. The noise should be fixed if you upgrade your firmware. If not please let us know your order number and, if possible, a video including the noise - we can provide a replacement.
Best regards,

I just completed an upgrade to MK2.5S/MMU2S from MK2S/MMU and I just wanted you to know that I am hearing the same part fan noise that others have described. I installed the latest firmware so that is not the issue. Since my fan is two years old, it is not under warranty. My question is, do you intend to offer an upgraded part fan in the future? I am going to keep using this fan until it dies and then purchase a new one.
For the MK2.5-3s printers, the print fan will almost certainly not change. Unless, there was some trouble with getting the same fan supplied to us, which is very unlikely.

Hello, im also getting noise at the 45° Fan. My print is brand new, has like 30 Hours printing and just startet with the noise. Could be the fan? Thanks!
