SyntaxWarning: invalid escape sequence

Python 3.12 and 3.13 are stricter about invalid escape sequences. This annotation in util.py now raises a Syntax Warning.

The solution should be simple.

Unfortunately, this project is basically dead. Author has gone MIA and hasn't responded or acted on pull requests in well over a year.
