Clarification (or creation) of standard arch API

Right now, I don't see an architecture API. That's not a huge issue, of course, since it's on MIPS right now only but to allow others to participate and contribute it'd be valuable to clarify that. Is there a standard API for adding a new architecture? If not, do we have a sense of what would be required to make that happen?
