Problem with compare_paths2 - Emacs 26 crashes when saving file

I am running Ubuntu 18.04 from my home dir using PRoot. I installed Emacs 26 and it crashes while saving the .emacs file. In the Terminal, PRoot generates the following:

proot: ./path/path.c:542: compare_paths2: Assertion `length2 > 0' failed.
proot warning: signal 6 received from process 23649

Previously I had used Emacs 24 under Ubuntu 16.04 without any problem.
