Tab groups should be preserved when closing a window

Hello!

My workflow when using firefox with Panorama Tabs has been to slowly pile up tab groups for everything i'm working on at the moment. I tell firefox to restore closed tabs on opening and use another extension to suspend inactive tabs so it works out pretty well. I recently made a mistake and closed my main window before a window I had pulled off to take advantage of my second monitor and Firefox only restored the tabs on that second window, eating all the saved tabs I had.

I've thought a little bit about possible solutions and my concept is this: Add a configuration switch that causes all tab groups to be moved to another open window when closing a window. This fits with my assumption that closing a window should not lose tabs, only suspend them until later.

I intend to write a PR for this myself, but I thought I'd go ahead and make an issue to see if anyone has input on what they think the expected behavior should be.

Thanks!

Same thing just happened to me! This has also happened in the past and I've forgotten the procedure to reload all those tabs.

EDIT: I just went to a backup and restored the file sessionstore.jsonlz4 in the profile. Restarted FF and my tabs are back!!! Yay. But this still should not be happening in any case.

Take a look at "Tab Manager Plus for Chrome" if you can. It has some great features.

https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/tab-manager-plus-for-chro/cnkdjjdmfiffagllbiiilooaoofcoeff

(It has a "Save Windows For Later" feature but that needs to be enabled in the settings.)

The things from that extension that I would really like.in Panorama Tab Groups are:

  • Show tab groups for all the windows, so I can easily drag tabs from one window to another

  • Allow a window to be suspended/saved/hidden, so I can still see and arrange the tabs in Panorama, but there is no Firefox window for that group, and they are not taking up any memory

  • Search, and then extract all tabs that match the search into a separate group/window. (Could be done by drag-select of results.)
