Remove unnecessary null pointer checks

Extra null pointer checks are not needed in functions like the following.

Agreed: these can and should be removed. We do this type of cleanup whenever we get a chance and I was aware of this particular one. Having said that, it would be fantastic if you could submit a PR with this particular fix. Thanks for bringing it up.
