library examples do not run when connected to thunderbolt display (MacOS)

Any of the sound library examples crash with runtime error:

libc++abi.dylib: terminating with uncaught exception of type std::runtime_error: RtApiCore::probeDeviceOpen: the device (2) does not support the requested channel count. Could not run the sketch (Target VM failed to initialize). For more information, read revisions.txt and Help → Troubleshooting.

When disconnecting the external display, everything works as expected.

Setup: Processing 3.3.5 Sound Library version 1.4.0 MacBook Pro (Retina, 13-inch, Early 2015) running MacOS Sierra 10.12.5 Apple Thunderbolt Display

@JKFennis thanks! I will need some time to investigate this since I can't test because I don't have a thunderbolt display.
