✨ Feature Suggestion | Sofware/Firewall Device and Network based firewalls

Open ph00lt0 opened this issue 2 years ago • 3 comments

@DesktopECHO https://github.com/privacytools/privacytools.io/issues/2373 opened this issue about a Pihole installation on windows.

Currently the website features a few firewalls for android Netguard and Pfsense for routers. This is a bit spread on the website and I think there also good recommendations to make for other firewalls.

A few I have seen or used myself:

  • https://github.com/evilsocket/opensnitch (Linux)
  • https://github.com/hectorm/hblock (unix)
  • https://www.netlimiter.com/ (Windows)
  • https://www.obdev.at/products/littlesnitch/index.html (MacOS)
  • https://www.purify-app.com/ (IOS)
  • https://github.com/privacytools/privacytools.io/issues/2244 (IOS)
  • https://github.com/privacytools/privacytools.io/issues/2333 (Android)
  • Adguard Home (Network)
  • Pihole (Network)

Not all of them are a full featured firewall in means of configuration or just a DNS sinkhole but generally these apps could improve your privacy by blocking requests of none browser apps.

Recommended by others in the comments:

  • https://github.com/objective-see/LuLu (MacOS)
  • https://github.com/Safing/portmaster (Windows)

We might also want to keep an eye on Portmaster. It's still in alpha tho, but it will be a great project.

Speaking of Little Snitch, there's an open-source alternative for it: LuLu

@Hassle-sleigh-dramatic-citizen-upstage i know Lulu but it's not nearly as good as Little snitch, but might be worth to recommend as well.
