🆕 Software Suggestion | Auto Cookie Optout
Basic Information
Name: Auto Cookie Optout Category: Browser Add-ons URL: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/auto-cookie-optout/ (GPLv3 source on GitHub)
Description
Automatically answers cookie wall prompts to reject all optional cookies on supported websites.
Since the cookie walls you see on the internet are mostly served by a limited list of third-party vendors, ACO is able to operate on a wide range of websites just by supporting these vendors. There's also support for some big websites like Google, YouTube and Instagram that have their own cookie wall.
Why I am making the suggestion
I wanted to post about it on reddit.com/r/privacytoolsIO to get some feedback and was referred here.
My connection with the software
I'm the author. There is no revenue model, no telemetry and all code is available for auditing. I just want to make my own browsing experience better and maybe share my tooling with a few other privacy enthusiasts.
- [x] I will keep the issue up-to-date if something I have said changes or I remember a connection with the software.
Is there anything that your Addon offers, that (I don't care about cookies) doesn't? https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/i-dont-care-about-cookies/?utm_source=addons.mozilla.org&utm_medium=referral&utm_content=search
That addon is a recommended from Mozilla, which means its source code was already reviewd and audited by the mozilla team. But I'm not sure if your Addon offers something extra :)
They're similar in purpose except for one crucial point. Excerpt from their website (emphasis mine):
In most cases, it just blocks or hides cookie related pop-ups. When it's needed for the website to work properly, it will automatically accept the cookie policy for you (sometimes it will accept all and sometimes only necessary cookie categories, depending on what's easier to do). It doesn't delete cookies.
Auto Cookie Optout will always reject optional cookies for privacy reasons.
It looks good.
