This one looks very reasonable I think it might be the safest for now to merge (before https://github.com/fwcd/kotlin-language-server/pull/637 and replacing https://github.com/fwcd/kotlin-language-server/pull/574 ). How is the process going?

You could try https://github.com/okuuva/auto-save.nvim (disclaimer: I'm one of the maintainers), as it is more actively maintained. Have a look into the `condition` config option.
