Checks
-
[x] I have checked that this issue has not already been reported.
-
[x] I have confirmed this bug exists on the latest version of pixi, using
pixi --version.
Reproducible example
pixi init --format pyproject
pixi add rdflib --pypi
pixi add streamlit --pypi

Python recognizes 'pyarrow.includes' as an importable package[^1],
but it is absent from setuptools' `packages` configuration.
This leads to an ambiguous overall configuration. If you want to distribute
this
package, please make sure that 'pyarrow.includes' is explicitly added
to the `packages` configuration field.
Alternatively, you can also rely on setuptools' discovery methods
(for example by using `find_namespace_packages(...)`/`find_namespace:`
instead of `find_packages(...)`/`find:`).
You can read more about "package discovery" on setuptools documentation page:
- https://setuptools.pypa.io/en/latest/userguide/package_discovery.html
If you don't want 'pyarrow.includes' to be distributed and are
already explicitly excluding 'pyarrow.includes' via
`find_namespace_packages(...)/find_namespace` or `find_packages(...)/find`,
you can try to use `exclude_package_data`, or `include-package-data=False` in
combination with a more fine grained `package-data` configuration.
You can read more about "package data files" on setuptools documentation page:

[^1]: For Python, any directory (with suitable naming) can be imported,

'pyarrow.tests.interchange' is absent from the `packages` configuration.

Python recognizes 'pyarrow.tests.interchange' as an importable package[^1],
but it is absent from setuptools' `packages` configuration.
This leads to an ambiguous overall configuration. If you want to distribute
this
package, please make sure that 'pyarrow.tests.interchange' is explicitly added
to the `packages` configuration field.
Alternatively, you can also rely on setuptools' discovery methods
(for example by using `find_namespace_packages(...)`/`find_namespace:`
instead of `find_packages(...)`/`find:`).
You can read more about "package discovery" on setuptools documentation page:
- https://setuptools.pypa.io/en/latest/userguide/package_discovery.html
If you don't want 'pyarrow.tests.interchange' to be distributed and are
already explicitly excluding 'pyarrow.tests.interchange' via
`find_namespace_packages(...)/find_namespace` or `find_packages(...)/find`,
you can try to use `exclude_package_data`, or `include-package-data=False` in
combination with a more fine grained `package-data` configuration.
You can read more about "package data files" on setuptools documentation page:
- https://setuptools.pypa.io/en/latest/userguide/datafiles.html
[^1]: For Python, any directory (with suitable naming) can be imported,
even if it does not contain any `.py` files.
On the other hand, currently there is no concept of package data
directory, all directories are treated like packages.

error: command 'cmake' failed: None
hint: This usually indicates a problem with the package or the build environment.
Expected behavior
I expected to have streamlit added without problem. I solved it by adding python=3.12 and then adding streamlit:
pixi add python=3.12
pixi add streamlit --pypi
I had the same issue.
pyproject.toml
[project]
name = ""
version = "1.7.0"
description = ""
authors = [
]
requires-python = ">=3.11"
dependencies = [
"opentelemetry-distro",
"opentelemetry-exporter-otlp",
"opentelemetry-instrumentation",
"pandas==2.2.3",
"pillow==11.2.1",
"polars==1.29.0",
"plotly==6.1.0",
"psutil==7.1.0",
"requests>=2.31.0",
"snowflake==1.4.0",
"snowflake-snowpark-python==1.31.0",
"streamlit==1.50.0",
]
[tool.pixi.workspace]
channels = ["conda-forge"]
platforms = ["linux-64"]
[tool.pixi.dependencies]
uv = "==0.7.11"
Then I updated my base docker image from
FROM ghcr.io/prefix-dev/pixi:0.46.0-noble to FROM ghcr.io/prefix-dev/pixi:0.56.0-noble
This is when the issue appeared.
To solve it, I had to add build-essential and cmake to my Dockerfile
RUN apt update \
&& apt install -y git gettext-base build-essential cmake \
&& apt-get clean \
&& rm -rf /var/lib/apt/lists/*
and pyarrow = ">=17.0.0" to the pyproject.toml
PyPI packages can't define non python packages as dependencies. So there is no way for pixi to understand this. You can just add the missing packages with a normal pixi add.
Some you might see more often are:
pixi add cmake
pixi add pkg-config
pixi add compilers
Closing this issue because it's a problem with the PyPI package itself and you can use Pixi to solve it.
