I'm not sure what can be done about the underlying issue until browsers actually allow matching the selection size to line-height, but some workaround so the selection at least doesn't block the text is possible

Can repro kinda in safari. Feels like the z depth is back to front in this case? It also leads to other strangeness, like the selection order not matching expectations:

There isn't much can be done here. Unless there's good reason to try "fixing" this (the thread starter didn't say what's the problem caused by the overlap), I don't see point keeping this one open.
