A page that lists top pp plays
Currently players know of top plays being made for one of the following reasons:
- they regularly watch the player on an external streaming site
- come across a post on a social media service - either player's twitter or /r/osugame subreddit
- have noticed the player has changed rank significantly
- decided to peak into player's profile.
It's kinda surprising there isn't a convenient display for achievements made by osu!'s best players on the site itself. I am thinking of a dedicated page under rankings that lists top pp plays made in the past day, week, month, year, and all-time. Maybe like a leaderboard of sorts.
The performance point system was never originally intended to be used to compare scores across maps like what you are proposing. i'm not sure how i feel legitimizing that officially.
I'm not personally a fan of comparing pp across maps like this or giving it so much value, but I don't think "legitimizing" this on abraker's suggested page is a large leap from how community treats pp already:
- pp across maps is aggregated into each user's pp, encouraging comparison of their scores across maps
- emphasis of pp values on social media has given players a general idea of the skills required to earn a certain amt of pp, regardless of the map (whether this was an intended ability or not)
- there's already huge hype around the topmost pp plays that encourages thinking like this
- most SR/pp balancing work factors in how it changes the way scores on different maps relate to each other
I'd be surprised if a lot of ppl even realise that this purpose of pp wasn't intended. I didn't know that until reading this thread. In my eyes this proposal would give convenience to those who care, and not take away anything from those who don't.
I would say, I see it as feature "player records", so it could show top pp plays, longest FC'ed map, fastest FCed map and hardest map FC'ed for example. It might sound as a huge pain, but this is my vision after reading and thinking about this thread.
