Reactions for forum posts

It'd be nice if users could react to forum posts with a small set of emoji, similar to how users can post a thumbsup or down on a github post. Other forums have been adopting this too because it's a fun thing but also a genuine improvement. Consider the following case:

Here a lot of users agree with the first post and have to dedicate a full post of their own to saying "vouch" or "+rep". This takes up a lot of space and makes the thread feel very polarizing. As result, it's hard for other users to enter the discussion and reply to each other's posts - it's too cluttered for that. Reactions would improve this greatly since they condense all of this to one small emoji, leaving room for others to make more meaningful posts.

This example is just one out of many.

Alternatively, things like "likes" or "upvotes" would partially address this as well, reactions are just more expressive.

I just hope this doesn't turn the forums into a reddit 2.0 where everything is just about farming upvotes, reposting and hive mentality where the most bland uncontroversial opinions make it to the top with "upvotes" and anyone who dares say something that goes against the status quo gets downvoted to the bottom.

I do think reacting to a comment within a topic with a thumbs up emoji indicating that you agree would be very nice though, as long as posts don't get sorted by "thumbsups", I don't think reacting to the topics/threads would be good though as it would just repilcate reddit, we already have osureddit for that :)

yea i dont think a thumbs up system should/would effect thread position in a forum if/when this gets implemented

just having a method of decluttering like github's reaction system is more than good for this IMO

Ye even other forums I use like VocaVerse or Mabinogi's have at least a thumbs up feature. It's not too foreign especially for modern forums

Yea to avoid the upvote farming thing it also should only display in the thread and not in search, or any other listing

And available only in subforums that actually need it

is there any design for it?

There isn't, and I don't think this will be a consideration in the near future (see priority tag).

Bumping this thread because I like that idea. It may be better to use it on necessary forum threads or anything others like announcements and much others. btw, I made a design about it on this thread https://osu.ppy.sh/community/forums/topics/1756074?n=1

I have more mixed feelings about this one now despite wanting it earlier. was convinced by a different forum proposing to add the same feature, and it ultimately being dismissed with various comments saying it encourages

  • less discussion/argument by giving a shortcut to agree/disagree without actually making any point (you can see this on many osu GH issues for example)
  • catering posts for reactions, and people who feel validated by this are encouraged to post like this even more, while the rest can be discouraged or intimidated
  • interaction at others' expense (quoting this other thread: "I felt like there was a lot of abusive posts towards people who weren't part of the clique because making jokes at someone else's expense was perceived as funny.")

I still think "decluttering" is a good motivation for this issue but I'm not sure how I would go about it to try to avoid these other concerns. it's a good feature if you can trust everyone to use it respectfully, but obviously that is not the case
