Performance issues on feature requests with many stars

not sure exactly what I should be profiling for this, but I can reproduce on more than one browser/device so I'm assuming it's not just me.

on firefox131 I have no issues with the latter, but the former runs all of its animations at very low framerate. my browser also freezes for a second or so when I switch back to this tab
