Describe the issue:
When installing Positron on Windows using the Positron-2024.08.0-31-UserSetup.exe installer, I get an error message indicating that an error occured while attempting to rename a file in the destination folder.
If I select the "Ignore" option, the installation ends, and the program looks working.
Steps to reproduce the issue:
- Launch the UserSetup executable
Were there any error messages in the UI, Output panel, or Developer Tools console?

For completeness:
During installation, the following error occurred:
An error occurred while trying to rename a file in the destination directory: MoveFile failed; code 3. The system cannot find the path specified.
File Path: C:\Users\user\AppData\Local\...\_implementation.pyi
I can confirm this is still happening with Positron-2024.09.0-77-UserSetup.exe.
I can confirm this is happening in Positron-2024.09.0-103-UserSetup.exe for several files:
Ditto @nickdickinson I have encountered the same error(s) using release version 2024.11.0-140 on at least three different Windows 10 Enterprise environments. FWIW, when skipping and proceeding with the installation, it looks like profile management is broken.
Is there a plan to fix this?
We believe we understand the issue and we are discussing options to fix.
