Gemini models not available in Positron Assistant with GitHub Copilot

System details: Positron and OS details: Positron Version: 2025.11.0 (system setup) build 234 Code - OSS Version: 1.105.0 Commit: 807acdfca108da6b9b2d96452fe047238da1bd9f Date: 2025-10-31T23:26:12.742Z Electron: 37.6.0 Chromium: 138.0.7204.251 Node.js: 22.19.0 V8: 13.8.258.32-electron.0 OS: Windows_NT x64 10.0.26200

Session details: R 4.3.3 [Please fill in your R/Python version]

GitHub Copilot (attempting to access Gemini models) Describe the issue: GitHub Copilot in VS Code now supports multiple AI models including Gemini models (Gemini 1.5 Pro, Gemini 2.0 Flash, Gemini 2.5 Pro, and the newly released Gemini 3 Pro). However, when using GitHub Copilot through Positron Assistant, these Gemini models are not visible in the model selection interface.

This functionality appears to be missing or not exposed in Positron's integration with GitHub Copilot. Steps to reproduce the issue:

Enable Positron Assistant with GitHub Copilot as a model provider Authenticate with GitHub Copilot (with a valid subscription that includes access to Gemini models) Open the Positron Assistant chat interface Attempt to select a different model or access model management Observe that Gemini models (Gemini 1.5 Pro, 2.0 Flash, 2.5 Pro, or 3 Pro) are not available

Expected or desired behavior: Positron Assistant should expose the full range of models available through GitHub Copilot, including:

GPT models (GPT-4o, GPT-4.5, o1-preview, o1-mini, etc.) Claude models (Claude 3.5 Sonnet, Claude 3.7 Sonnet) Gemini models (Gemini 1.5 Pro, 2.0 Flash, 2.5 Pro, 3 Pro) Any other models supported by the user's GitHub Copilot subscription

Users should be able to:

View all available models in a model selector Switch between different models during a chat session Set preferences for default models Access "Manage Models" functionality similar to VS Code

Thank you for this report! 🙌

As of:

Positron Version: 2025.12.0 build 114 Code - OSS Version: 1.106.0 Commit: d49b1e96dfbb289f3982c5f861b75e442a1484dc Date: 2025-11-21T07:19:25.380Z Electron: 37.7.0 Chromium: 138.0.7204.251 Node.js: 22.20.0 V8: 13.8.258.32-electron.0 OS: Darwin arm64 25.1.0

the UI here has changed a little bit, but I can confirm that I do not see any Gemini models to choose from.

The dropdown in the chat pane:

What I see if I choose "Manage Models":

I am logged into the same GitHub account in VS Code, and I see the Gemini models:

I checked this out, and think it's related to PR #10439 which allows filtering which models are displayed. By default, this is limited to Claude and GPT models. We may need to revisit what the defaults are for this setting.

For now, you can search for positron.assistant.filterModels in Positron settings, click "Add Item", and add "gemini" to that list (no quotes). I was able to verify locally that this adds Gemini to the available models for Copilot!
