Irregular freezing when alt-tabbing between full screen applications

Open Draco18s opened this issue 2 years ago • 4 comments

(1) Issue/Bug Description:

This is an inconsistent behavior, but it seems that when I alt-tab to/from a full screen application the shell will occasionally lock up stuck in the "alt tab window thumbs" view. Programs continue to run (videos will still play, discord calls still transmit audio, games still run, even the thumbnails continue to update) but no input other than mouse position is reacted to (cursor still moves, but no clicks, and no keyboard commands do anything).

Possibly related to #1462 or #112.

(2) Steps to reproduce (if you know):

Alt tabbing repeatedly (possibly in quick succession) between applications where one is full screen. Full screen app may not be required, just that when it happens it happens when I am alt-tabbing between a game and something else (correlation not necessarily causation).

(3) Expected behavior:

No freezing.

(4) Distribution (run cat /etc/os-release):

22.04

(5) Gnome Shell version:

GNOME Shell 42.1

(6) Pop Shell version (run apt policy pop-shell or provide the latest commit if building locally):

pop-shell: Installed: 1.1.0~1653677645~22.04~44ca2cd Candidate: 1.1.0~1654875799~22.04~811201b

(7) Where was Pop Shell installed from:

Installed via bootable disk downloaded from system76.com

(8) Monitor Setup (2 x 1080p, 4K, Primary(Horizontal), Secondary(Vertical), etc):

One external 1600x900

(9) Other Installed/Enabled Extensions:

  • Dash to Panel
  • Desktop Icons NG
  • Fullscreen notifications (issue predates installing this one)
  • No Annoyance v2 (also installed recently, may or may not have been before the issue first presented itself)
  • Notification Banner Reloaded

I would like to second this. I ran into the same issue and I am running the same software setup bar the fact I have only the default extensions enabled. A few side notes to this:

  1. I noticed that disabling the Cosmic dock extension lowers the frequency of freezes
  2. When a freeze occurs CTRL + ALT + F3 followed by CTRL + ALT + F2 would result in the ability to start the Gnome terminal using ALT + F2 and then restarting it via the r command. This will usually end up resolving the frozen fullscreen application although very tedious as it does not always work and requires to be done multiple times in succession to get the application to unfreeze.
  3. There is this issue filed on the Gnome shell repository "Freeze when going into a fullscreen application " which may be related as the people reporting the issue are also running Pop OS - the workarounds in that issue do not work for me

I did figure out that there's an easier fix to the freeze: press enter.

Something is hijacking mouse input, but pressing Enter selects the alt-tab highlighted application and it resolves itself.

I just had this happen today to me for the 4th or 5th time in the ~2 years of using PopOS.

I did not try the fix suggested by @Draco18s as I read about it after having restarted my PC. This is just to say that the issue still exists.

I run into this issue sometimes as well, it seems to still be there. When it happens my computer doesn't respond to either mouse or keyboard inputs and I have to restart it.
