Ability to create symlinks

Open 9thyear2 opened this issue 1 year ago • 3 comments

don't really care if its a right click menu option, or ctrl + shift drag and drop

decided to see if this was in cosmic file since nautilus broke theirs (apparently there was a regression (on wayland), and i cant seem to get it to work)

since it wasn't i made this issue

Symlinks are problematic for normal users and shouldn't be in the normal context menu imo. Most users would want to create a shortcut to file/folder rather than a symlink which can cause problems with things like cloud storage.

But if I actually want apps to work with the files/directories, a .desktop file shortcut won't work, right ? Where as a symlink is treated as just another file/folder.

Say I have all my music on a separate mounted drive in '/mnt/drive/Music'. I create a symlink at '$HOME/Music' pointing to '/mnt/drive/Music'. I open a music app and it does not care that the files are on an externally mounted drive, it just goes through '$HOME/Music' like it always does by default.

That's an example of my use case and I'd love to be able to create symbolic links without the CLI. Maybe provide both options.

Or have some custom implementation that's unique to COSMIC like how Windows has shortcuts with .lnk which only explorer shell parses for GUI only.
