[Applet Idea] COSMIC Connect

Open onlyreportingissues opened this issue 1 year ago • 9 comments

Just throwing this idea out into the wild, maybe a dev / community member would like to create it.

The name says it already, the COSMIC version of GSConnect / KDE Connect.

As extensive user of KDE Connect (even on Windows), I would like to see at least a compatibility wrapper for KDE Connect, while I wouldn't mind to use an separate app, like Zorin Connect.

KDE Connect aims to not be KDE specific, so I think it would be ideal to use kde-connect, but probably with a COSMIC applet that integrates with it. Assuming that's doable.

I haven't yet looked into exactly which features of KDE connect don't yet work on COSMIC and what they might require.

I think having a connect app for mobile devices, or just integration between platforms/computers, should be under freedesktop. That way, it could be adapted and branded for different desktop environments—not just KDE or COSMIC—making everything more seamless and compatible. Plus, it would save us from needing three different apps just because we use three different DEs on our PCs. Or at least, maybe we could craft a standard under freedesktop.

Later on, this could be expanded with features like the Apple ecosystem has, such as iPhone mirroring, copying text or files between devices, or even directly handling calls. Then freedesktop can create an ecosystem that's open for everyone, unlike Apple's closed approach. This would also be great for Linux phones—yeah, I know they're not really a thing right now, but it would be nice to have this kind of integration if they ever take off.

Well... there is one https://github.com/andyholmes/valent but its not baked properly yet, it needs polish.

This is much needed, KDE Connect is such a great and useful program. I really hope Cosmic team will make a Cosmic Connect

Oh yes, this is very much needed. A native cosmic friendly version of kdeconnect/gsconnect/valent.

This would be a crucial part of our workflow

Could it still possibly use KDE Connect on mobile or would it need another app ?

as long as the protocol is the same you wont (theoretically) need a seperate app, although Zorin has its own. For example with Flatpak Valent that i currently use I have the kde connect app, and many things already work as are.

I tried using valent but I did not see ping notifications from my phone to my cosmic panel, so I thought it isnt compatible, despite connecting to my phone. I need real time notification sync of my phone onto my desktop.

What tweaks did you do?

Since this is beyond the scope of this issue, I 'm not gonna go too deep, but honestly for me (for notifications) Valent works out of the box.

There is a community project at https://github.com/hepp3n/cosmic-ext-applet-connect
