Create a Table of Contents (TOC) on SharePoint Modern Pages

Background I find that the Modern SharePoint Page is a fantastic place for creating tutorials, articles, and even some ramblings to share with your co-workers.

I really hope they make a better built in solution, for a page with multiple headings and subheadings this is tedious, and requires manual updates with any changes made to them. My dislike for Sharepoint grows daily

Sharepoint Online seems to be at the very beginning when it comes to real practical and useable functions. At the moment I have to migrate some wiki pages from atlassian confluence to sharepoint online. It´s way more manual work and tons of (imho) useless functions inside and with sharepoint online. :(

I had a go at creating a bookmarklet which extracts headers and anchors from a Sharepoint Online document and creates Markdown code for a Table of Contents with links in an indented list which you can then just drop into the Markdown web part:. See the Github page

Orangeaurochs solution works beautifully. Recommended.
