how do i specify MPIRUN with tests?

I am on a Ubuntu machine where the path to the right MPI implementations are mpicc.mpich and mpirun.mpich. I cannot figure out how to get the tests to use the latter, as the environment variable MPIRUN doesn't do anything. I can't even see where this is set in tests/Makefile...
