The library is outdated, while brilliant when there was no native support; now you can check out these documentations made in the official lib:

Agreed that it's not needed for React-Navigation v.2+

Some users that are stuck with v.1 might still benefit of it.

@pmachowski very good point This is a good project to help keep people using the older lib useable :)
