[bug] / misconfig: plugdata-fx vst3 not suitable for stereo inputs

A bug or misconfig i encounter in Steinberg's Wavelab 11:

"plugdata-fx cannot be connected for processing 2 inputs" (plugdata-fx can be inserted into a slot, but receives no audio).

Wavelab is a stereo editing software for mastering and other fun. Given that it's Steinberg it should be able to work with a properly configured VST3 plugin. Wavelab - unlike Reaper for instance - has no separately configurable input/output matrix setting available. It probably does expect a 2ch version - which would be fine by me to use.

Is it possible, that some sort of autoconfig in your VST3 compiler is missing to automatically readjust itself to the multichannel capabilities of the host DAW?
