Wedge 'nubs' too large for Trackball Base Holes

Forgive me if I'm just missing the forest for the trees here, but is there a reason that the four "frustums" on the top of the wedge are oversized compared to the holes they mate with on the bottom of the Ploopy? The wedge-wedge connection is solid, as the surfaces lay flush against one another, but the ploopy bottom sits ~1mm above the wedge suface due to the size mismatch.

I have the pads installed on the bottom of my mouse and on a wedge, and they mate "correctly" which I think explains their larger size. i.e. with no pads they would be oversized, but with pads they would not engage

I personally have a tip and it splits open issue. When it happened to me, kind of gave the rocking in my hand feeling. In my case I took the pads off and put a moderately thin clear double-sided tape between them to stop it from happening. 1/2" (12.7mm) 0.85mm thick tape.
