Suggestion: Display the block name at the top of the selected block in the editor
Hello everyone!
I would like to propose an improvement to the Volto editing experience: display a tag with the block name (for example, “Block — Block Title”) at the top of the block when it is selected in the editor.
The idea is to make it easier to identify the type of block being edited, especially in projects with many blocks or similar blocks. The name would be extracted from blocksConfig[type].title, ensuring that the user-friendly title defined in the block configuration is shown.
However, I’d like to hear your opinion:
Do you think this visual information would help or would it clutter the interface?
Would it be useful for those editing more complex content, or could it disrupt the visual flow?
What do you think? Is it worth pursuing this idea?
Suggestions for implementation or alternative approaches are also welcome!
Thank you!
Examples:
@wesleybl @stevepiercy @sneridagh @ksuess and @plone/volto-team , I’d really appreciate your feedback to see if this suggestion makes sense or if it might clutter the interface. What do you think? Any suggestions or points of view are welcome!
I think that is a useful enhancement. Currently I can't tell what is the block type until I try to interact with it. There is the Order tab, but it uses icons to convey the same information, but not always successfully.
It would be good to try this on a narrow screen first, and check whether the text has side effects, such as increasing the height onHover, onClick, or onFocus.
@alexandreIFB the type of the block is shown in the sidebar for all blocks (except those who do not have sidebar). We discarded this type of approach in the past because of UI cluttering.
@stevepiercy can i start working on this ?
@VibhuGupta-dev If you read the discussion here, you'll see that there is no agreement that this is what we want.
