Intermittent `Error: Collection is not initialized!`

On the application start I connect to the MongoDB instance and run the initialize function before doing some migrations.

But some times I get this error Error: Collection is not initialized! other times I don't. It's intermittent.

What are the main reasons for this error to happen, even though my collection was initialized?
