Lack of some IMPORTANT general development board models, such as the "ESP32S3 Dev Module".
When creating a new project, the development board models are not as comprehensive as those in the Arduino IDE. It is hoped that the updates can be kept in line with the materials of the Arduino IDE.

If you scroll down, both "Espressif ESP32-S3-DevKitC-1-N8" and "Espressif ESP32-S3-DevKitM-1" boards are available.
This project quit accepting even community-developed PRs for Espressif hardware. Look in the PR queue for the relevant module and you'll find dozens of contributed boards and fixes for the S3 and C3.
The place to be if you want modern Espressif support, assisted by Espressif themselves, is the Pioarduino project. See

You might as well close this, as the business side of those talks have seemed to have come to a halt...if they ever actually got off the ground. If you want modern ESP32 support, PlatformIO is just not the place to be.
