Improve readme

I'd love to be able to help solve some of the open issues, but the Readme does not contain enough information for me to know to to build the code and run the tests. I tried, but some steps were missing.

We have created an issue in Pivotal Tracker to manage this. Unfortunately, the Pivotal Tracker project is private so you may be unable to view the contents of the story.

The labels on this github issue will be updated when the story is started.
