[WIP] extend doc

This is an attempt at and first step towards splitting the doc into multiple detailed pages per topic. Some inspiration was drawn from https://pandas.pydata.org/docs/user_guide/index.html .

We can leave it open for now. Progress is quite modest currently. I'm opening the PR to give you the opportunity to comment about the direction it's taking.
